⏵ character information
name:  Heather (Cheryl) Mason
canon: Silent Hill 3
age: 17
canon point: Facing God in the final boss battle
history: Here
abilities:

Although Alessa was shown to have some level of supernatural powers, this was never really explored upon in the sequel. In addition, these powers are not shown to be passed down onto Heather, thus rendering her a normal human due to the failure of Claudia filling her heart with hatred. However, despite this, she is still able to be drawn into Silent Hill and see the monsters that represent her fears, past selves, and worries. As this world was created by Alessa herself many years ago, and the cult's goal is to have Heather birth their new God, she is unable to die in 'the other world', being brought back to life by Valtiel when she seems to pass out.

For skills, Heather is very capable of fighting and defending herself. With her father being a gun fanatic who emphasized to Heather the importance of being able to defend yourself, Heather has a strong knowledge of guns and being able to use tasers. She is also shown to carry a switchblade with her for fun.

personality:

TW: Child abuse, SA, pregnancy, religious themes, murder
Heather is first introduced to us in a nightmare she was having about dying in the 'other world' while at the Lakeside Amusement park, a foreshadowing of the true nature and backstory of this mysterious girl. Once she awakens from the dream, throughout the first portion of the game we are presented with a girl who appears to be quite a normal teenager. She's shown to be vulnerable, but secure in herself, loving and doting with her father, but sets strong boundaries with a detective who approaches her, kind and friendly, but uncaring to those who bother her. As she tries to make her way out of the mall avoiding Detective Douglas Carter, we begin to see small tidbits of her thoughts and personality as the mall slowly beings to be consumed by the 'other world' as a result of Claudia, and the cult of Silent Hill finding her.

Throughout this first portion of the game, Heather makes comments and opinions typical of a young, but head-strong teenager. In her time at the mall she begins to be drawn back into her past life when Douglas appeared, wanting to talk about her past. Having been taught to distrust strangers and how to use weapons by her (gun-loving) father Harry, Heather is shown to be on edge whenever confronted by a stranger. She isn't very polite to the man, rudely answering him and even demanding to be left alone. She easily left the area by sneaking out of the bathroom and is shown to express more of her thoughts and beliefs as she tries to escape the mall that has become taken over by the 'Otherworld'. Here we see her talk about clothes and while liking them, she needs to get home. We also see her easily make comments of disgust towards certain things, showing that she doesn't hesitate to say what's on her mind. One interesting moment we see in the mall is when she finds money and mentions how it's nice to have it, but she isn't a thief- if prompted, she even debates on this and decides she doesn't need it. This kind of moment shows that she is somewhere in between being a child and an adult, enforcing her own morals and trying to decide between being morally good or caving into impulsiveness. Interestingly enough, it is in this same scenario (and viewing her switchblade weapon) that we see she has a bit of a mischievous streak- she says she can steal the money and carries with her at the start of the game a switchblade that she knows she shouldn't have but finds cool to do so. This shows that despite the trauma and lingering darkness, she has a tendency to be just a normal teenager.

In her journey, Heather meets two other individuals that show more of her hot-headed temper and moody personality. The first person she encounters is Claudia Wolf, a member of the order who seeks to finish Dahlia's work (her first incarnation's mother). Although she speaks cryptically at first and suggest she's the one behind the mall being overruled by monsters, Heather is quick to call her crazy and get into heated arguments with her whenever they encounter. Another individual she runs into is Vincent Smith, another member of the cult who claims to be on Heather's side and only looking out for her. She quickly grows to hate him as he speaks poorly about her father, something that sets her off easily. She is quick to defend him and demand others show respect for him. Although Douglas, Claudia and Vincent are adults, Heather does not hesitate to distrust them and call them out- something that may seem as insolent or insubordination coming from a younger person. She does not hesitate to back-talk to them, or speak to them as if she were at the same level as them.

As Heather begins to discover why these two individuals are pursuing her, with her goal getting back to her father as promised, we as the viewer also begin to see hints and foreshadowing of the looming background to who this person really is. In order to understand who Heather is, we have to first look into her shared history with Alessia Gillespie, Cheryl Mason, Harry Mason, and The Order:
In the original Silent Hill game, Harry Mason finds a baby girl on the road and names her Cheryl. After the death of his wife, Harry is drawn to Silent Hill and looses Cheryl there. Unbeknownst to him, the town of Silent Hill was home to a cult called 'The Order' who drove out residents and tourists over time. The cult's goal was and still is to bring about a new world order by bringing to life their God, to usher in a new paradise. The cult's most faithful worshiper Dahlia, would abuse her daughter Alessa so that she would be prime for being the host mother for the new God and as a result of her own religious trauma. Once Alessa was fifteen, her mother took her to a secluded room, casted a spell and set the room on fire in order to impregnate her with the new God. This both succeeded and failed- Alessa did become pregnant with the God, however Alessa used her super natural powers she was born with to possess the town with the other world, and split her soul that escaped and was born as Cheryl. In an effort to get back Cheryl and combine her with Alessa, Dahlia lured Harry Mason to Silent Hill. the story ends with Alessa and Cheryl reincarnating as a new baby that Harry took with him.

This is an important part of Heather's personality because she is that baby Harry took back with him and her relationship with his is heavily influenced by these new changes. In addition to that, Heather's fears, subconscious, and hidden memories are a reflection of the past lives she has lived. While Cheryl doesn't have much of a personality to draw from, Alessa does as she is the original Heather.
To understand how this background has and is affecting Heather currently, we must first return to the present with Heather. When she finally is able to escape the mall, she makes it back home and sees that her father was murdered by cult members (on Claudia's order). This was done to fill Heather's soul with bitterness, anger, and negative emotions to make her new body prime to carry God once more. She decides to head into Silent Hill for revenge and with this, we begin to see more of a change in Heather's personality as she learns more about the cult and why they are after her. Up until this point, she has no recollection of her memories as Alessa nor of her true nature. These details are hinted at her by Douglas, Claudia (an antagonist for Heather), and the 'otherworld' through the form of monsters, writings, and puzzles Heather must face in order to go home. However Heather doesn't really pay attention to these details as she has only one thing in mind; getting home to her father before it gets darker. This is the biggest motivator for Heather in the first half of the series; despite the numerous odd things she sees and faces, she just wants to get home to her beloved father and relax at home like any teenager would.

On the way back to Silent Hill, she now begins to show stress, fear, and anxiety over the situation she is in and begins to develop a deep seeded anger in her that drives her to team up with Douglas and reveal t Despite teaming up with him, she is in a deep sorrow over the death of her father and easily blames Douglas as he was hired by the cult to find Harry and investigate Heather. She also begins to abandon any remaining naivety and childlike tendencies, as shown by the comments she makes in her apartment after discovering the death of her father. She comments on things like her dolls saying she no longer needs them, and on a movie poster with an optimistic logo saying "I always liked that line, but now it just seems stupid."

Once making it to Silent Hill, Heather continues on her journey to find Claudia and kill her for the death of her father. Here she begins to make comments about the horrors she is facing, saying she has become numb to them. Although she accepts and understands that suffering is a part of life, it seems she doesn't necessarily think it's something that should happen, as shown in her comments about Claudia, Vincent, and bodies she finds throughout the town. It is in the town also that she begins to remember her past life as Alessa and Cheryl, and begins to comment on things she remembers. As this is important influence on her actions later on and the behaviors she begins to show, it is time to discuss Alessa.
Alessa, as mentioned previously, is the daughter of Dahlia Gillespie, a leader of The Order. At a young age Alessa was shown to have super natural powers which caused her to be bullied endlessly by her classmates and chosen as the bearer of the cult's God by her mother. As such, Dahlia emotionally and physically abused her daughter to fill her with anger and hatred as the cult believed good and positive emotions were the cause of so much hate in the world. Dahlia would beat her small daughter up, lock her in a dark and secluded room for hours if she refused her ideologies, and would verbally torment her. Although some of her teachers noticed this and even hired a lawyer to help her, they were unable to as Dahlia was able to dismiss their concerns and worries. Despite the torment and abuse Alessa faced, she was a very kind and caring person who tried her best to thrive through her adversities. She didn't necessarily believe in the religion at all which caused most of her abuse, but she did try her best to play the part.
Her one friend was Claudia Wolf, a girl who was two years younger than her and also brutalized by her father. Having both suffered at the hands of their parents, the two girls were inseparable and would play games together and loved each other deeply. On Claudia's birthday, Alessa wrote that she viewed her as a little sister and loved her. Her love for Claudia was so great, she would write about the girl such as mentioning she wasn't very good at cards and would cry whenever she lost, something that made Alessa care for her more. However the two lost touch and because of Harry, Claudia grows to hate Heather and demands to have Alessa back.
The two lost touch when Alessa became old enough and her mother decided it was time to sacrifice the girl in order to bring to life God. She kidnapped her own daughter and set the room on fire to bring in the new God, casting a spell on her so that she would become pregnant with the God. Although Alessa had been raised in the religion and had their ideologies beat into her, she was smart enough to deduce and figure out for herself that  bringing to life a new God, one born from anger, trauma, and hatred would be bad for the world. So she willingly split her soul and was unable to birth the new God, although it was growing in her.

During her time in recovery, growing and festering the new God, Alessa showed her resilient and kind nature. Lying in a hospital bed, covered in bandages and suffering from third-degree burns, she still appeared to be hopeful about the future and showed kindness to her nurse Lisa Garland. She is self-sacrificing as shown later on in the series, coming back as a memory and attacking Heather during her journey in Silent Hill. Her desires to save others from suffering the same faith as her as so strong, they came to life in the form of a monster who looks like Heather. This Alessa's goal ultimately is to kill Heather, thus ending her suffering and ability to give birth to a new God.

Once Heather begins to understand more about her past, the cult, and her memories, she becomes more understanding and forgiving of others. The first person she begins to change with is Douglas- initially the man was annoying to the girl, then became a source of hatred for leading Claudia to her father, but eventually Heather realizes he was just doing his job and being used. She becomes close to him, relying on him and even substituting him for the role of her father, however this doesn't stop her from being sarcastic and humorous with him. She seems to care about his struggles and when she finds him injured from his confrontation with Claudia, she tries to assure him everything will be alright and she will take care of it. This shows that Heather is the kind of person who can see beyond her own anger and even sympathize with others despite her strong emotions. She blamed Douglas for the death of her father partially, but even in her grief she is able to forgive him and understand the complexities behind his role in all this.

As for Claudia, her relationship with the woman is complicated. As Alessa she did care for her and love her as a sister, but as Heather she held a lot of hatred towards her for what she did and as she realized Claudia only cared about Alessa coming back to birth their God, her hatred and distrust of her only grew. She is shown to taunt Claudia at times, yell at her, get into heated arguments, and threaten her life with ease. When Heather is mad, crossed, or her father is insulted, she becomes like a stubborn bull who refuses to be tamed. The only sympathy she shows Claudia is when she is praying in a confessional booth, and Heather enters it and eavesdrops on her. The woman asks for forgiveness, and Heather responds as God, saying she forgives Claudia for what she has done. For most people this would mean she forgave the woman for murdering her father, however when Heather is informed she is pregnant with the new God and rejects it, giving it to Claudia, she expresses dismay when the new God kills Claudia and Heather is unable to get revenge.

Her relationship with Vincent is another affirmation of her personality and how she interacts with those who antagonize her. Introduced as a cocky, rude, and egotistical man who claims to be on Heather's side and knows everything about her, Heather instantly dislikes him for insulting her father. She is quick to fight with the man and is tormented by him throughout the game. He gives her hints about her past, but won't answer her, and often plays cruel and malicious jokes on her. Throughout the series, Heather has to fight monsters that are symbols of Alessa's torture and fears, and Heather's feelings. Vincent cruelly says "You see them as monsters?", implying they were human, causing Heather to become shocked and afraid. Despite this, she shows some sympathy with him when she sees he was killed by Claudia, stating he didn't deserve to die.
